Whakapapa Ski Fields

Year after year snow enthusiasts' flock to the region to enjoy all Mt Ruapehu has to offer - from excellent trails and terrain parks through tobogganing and crater walks.

Each season usually runs from around mid-June until late Spring in October and accommodation of all types can be found throughout National Park and the surrounding towns like Ohakune, which is located at the base the Turoa side.

Tongariro National Park offers trampers and hikers some of the best mountain scenery in New Zealand. From volcanic terrain to thermal lakes, waterfalls and snowy peaks this world heritage site offers it all.

A vast array of walks are available including the region's most celebrated ones - the 'Tongariro Alpine Crossing'. Completed by about 65,000 people each year this walk traverses the rugged landscape between Ngauruhoe and Tongariro and is described as the best one day trek in New Zealand.
