Central North Island Destinations
The Central North Island is one of the most diverse regions in the country. From the stunning white sandy beaches of the Coromandel to Hamilton's vibrant café scene and the snow capped peak of Mt Ruapehu , the central North Island offers something for every type of traveller.
If you're after the adventure tourism that NZ is world-renowned for, our region boasts some of the country's best. While Taupo's Sky Diving experiences will be a hit with any adrenalin junkie, the subterranean world of black water rafting, abseiling and cave exploration of Waitomo Caves is also a must. Go extreme off roading in a 4WD or take a spin on the mighty Waikato River in a V8 powered jet boat.
If arts and culture is more your style, the central North Island caters for all tastes. From the galleries and museums of Hamilton to Tauranga's thriving artistic community and the heartland of Maori culture, Rotorua you will discover the best of what NZ has to offer. Or if food & wine is what you fancy, the Central North Island has a raft of high quality wineries, gourmet eateries and artisan producers.
With so many activities on offer families visiting the region will also have a hard time deciding on which to choose. Visit the Hamilton Zoo, experience a traditional Maori feast (hangi), see New Zealand iconic Kiwi up close and personal in Otorohanga and visit the Hobbiton set of the academy award winning Lord of the Rings trilogy in Matamata .
Thinking about a beach holiday? Black or white sand? It's your choice as the region has both. Raglan on the West Coast with its black sand is a mecca for surfers due to it's amazing left-hand break or if its golden grains you're after the coastlines of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui or the Coromandel have what you seek.
