Te Aroha
Famed as a spa town in the late 19th century, Te Aroha is again becoming an iconic place on any travellers' itinerary. The thermal and mineral springs continue to delight visitors who come to soak in the spas and marvel at the world's only hot soda water geyser (Mokena).
The town's proud history is apparent as you browse amongst the antique shops and boutique stores or follow the Te Aroha's heritage trail which showcases buildings and monuments dating back to the 1880s.
The area is also home to a variety of scenic treks and walks, including Mt Te Aroha itself, the Waiorongomai Valley, where the region's gold mining history can be explored, and Wairere Falls with its two stage majestic drops of 80 and 73 metres.
The forests are also home to numerous glowworms which can be seen on adventurous night walks and the 12 kms of all weather track built around the foothills of Mt Te Aroha should please any keen mountain biker.
