Runway Extension

Airport Seeks Planning Approvals To Extend Runway

Hamilton International Airport is seeking planning approvals to protect its ability to extend its main runway in the future to enable international flights beyond Australia and to accommodate larger aircraft.

By lengthening the runway to almost 3000 metres, it would become only the third airport in New Zealand able to support direct flights to Asia and the US, with the other airports being Auckland and Christchurch.

Following Pacific Blue commencing international flights from HIA, the ability to extend the runway will significantly increase the number and types of airlines that could potentially fly into Hamilton in the future.

Airport chief executive Chris Doak said, however, it is unlikely the runway extension will proceed in the near future as there is no business case for it yet and the priority for now is on achieving planning permission which could take up to two years.
